Media-shy Salah lets his feet do the talking
Despite being lauded by the Italian and global media alike after his outstanding performance for Fiorentina, Salah is media-shy
Great win today boys, thank God." This post on Twitter was all that Mohamed Salah said after leading Fiorentina to a historic 2-1 semi-final first-leg win against Italian league champions Juventus in Coppa Italia on Thursday night.
Salah, currently on a six-month loan from English Premier League leaders Chelsea, could not have made a more impressive start to his Italian career, having bagged six goals in just seven games for Fiorentina.
He deservedly grabbed the headlines with a fabulous performance at Juventus, where he notched his side's two goals – including a stunning solo effort which saw him receive the ball near the halfway line before outpacing Simone Padoin to bag the opener.
And despite earning praise from teammates and opponents alike, Salah seemed not ready to release any media statements following his magnificent display, which helped end a 42-match unbeaten home run for Juventus.
That was apparent right after the game when BeIN sports correspondent summoned Salah to interview him, but the Egyptian seemed reluctant to talk with the Middle-East based TV channel.
"It is not about arrogance at all. He refused to talk to any reporter but he came here to say hi to the anchors and commentators in the studio as he doesn't want to make any media statements at this stage. It is his position and we can accept it," the correspondent explained.
"I advise Salah not to fall into the trap of paying attention to the Egyptian media," former Egypt and AS Roma striker Mido, who currently works as a pundit for BeIN sports, said after the game.
"The media will do everything to stop him from continuing his successful run. That's exactly what happened to me.
"Should he fail to similarly impress in any game with the national side, he will be harshly slated by the media. Our media isn't professional enough when it comes to dealing with our players abroad."
The 22-year-old's demeanour seemed somewhat different this time, having been open to TV interviews during his successful spell at Swiss champions Basel.
The media shyness of the former-Arab Contractors forward, hardly a troublemaker throughout his career, has raised questions as to whether his approach will help him in the near future.
So far, Salah has been consistent for Viola, scoring in the Serie A, Europa League and finally the domestic cup – prompting speculations regarding whether parent club Chelsea will retain his services after his loan spell or will sell him.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho had previously voiced his satisfaction with Salah's recent form for Fiorentina, indicating that sending him on loan was intended to have him playing after struggling for first team football at Stamford Bridge.
Fiorentina, who are fifth-placed in the league, have a tough March fixture list, where they will be facing Lazio, AC Milan and AS Roma in the Serie A and Europa League.
Media shy or not, Salah should solely focus on building on his stellar displays for Fiorentina in the forthcoming period if he is to secure a major switch after his loan spell ends in the summer.
